Drogheda now has a population of 67,000 people that figure was recently obtained through a census and covers areas around Drogheda such as East Meath.

Anna McKenna who is chairperson of the campaigning group spoke to Newstalk Breakfast: “Drogheda has been neglected for years. She said that city status would serve as a welcome, if challenging, boost for the area.

Drogheda having a city status does come with cons though such as higher competition, Anna continued: “It is important to acknowledge potential challenges that come with it. A transition to a city would indeed come with increased competition and the need for careful resource management.”

If Drogheda do become a city it will be the sixth in Ireland to do so.
