Based on a recently revised ranking that was made public this week, the Irish passport is currently regarded as the fourth best in the world. Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom tied for fourth position on the 2023 Henley Passport Index, which gauges how freely residents may travel abroad.
According to the index, which is determined in real-time by the global citizenship company Henley & Partners, holders of Irish passports may enter 188 out of 227 nations without a visa. The company determined that the strongest passport to have in 2023 is from Singapore using information from the International Air Transport Association to evaluate 199 different passports.
The number of nationalities that can enter a country without a visa is also measured by the Henley Openness Index. Ireland allowed twice as many nations (88) to come without a visa, placing it 47th in terms of openness.
According to Temple University professor Peter J. Spiro, “EU states grant visa-free privileges to more than twice the number of states than does the US.”
