Michael Collins's close friend MacEoin was a pivotal figure in the War of Independence more than a century ago.

The blacksmith from Longford subsequently rose to the rank of Army chief of staff and Fine Gael government minister.

The “Rose Cottage,” the structure where he organised his defences, is currently being transformed into an exhibition space.

It will recount the events of the Battle of Ballinalee, fought on November 4, 1920, during the War of Independence. It will serve as a nexus for the community as well. The success of this initiative has been aided by the local community.

Several years ago, they resisted plans to demolish the cottage and build homes there.

The Town and Village Renewal Scheme, Ballinalee Community Group, and Longford County Council are the funding sources for this project provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar formally launched the facility.

During the event, dignitaries were led to the Seán MacEoin monument for a ceremonial wreath-laying by the Army Colour Party and the Longford Pipe Band.
