Idealista has put together a comprehensive list of national holidays and even some fun facts about them.

  • New Year’s Day: The first Monday of the year is also a public holiday.
  • Easter Holidays: Friday, March 29, you can take the whole weekend off and enjoy the festivities. Easter Sunday in 2024 falls on March 31.
  • April 25: Taking place on a Thursday in 2024, at this time the good weather usually returns across Europe, and you can organise a fantastic spring break.
  • May 1: On a Wednesday, you will be entitled to Labor Day. You can take a holiday from April 26 to May 2, and you will have almost two weeks of rest.
  • Dia do Corpo de Deus: This religious holiday will be celebrated across the country on May 30.
  • June 10: Dia de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas
  • Dia da Assunção da Nossa Senhora: August 15, the only holiday in the middle of summer, which falls on a Thursday.
  • October 5: Dia da Implantação da República is one of the most important holidays in Portugal, which falls on a Saturday.
  • November 1: Dia de Todos os Santos will be on a Friday, which will be opportune to organise a long weekend getaway. Some cities in Europe are also cheaper at this time.
  • December 1: Dia da Restauração da Independência is an option for your first holiday in December, however, it falls on a Sunday.
  • December 8: Also on a Sunday, Dia da Imaculada Conceição, the patron saint of Portugal.
  • December 25: The last holiday of 2024, corresponding to Christmas Day, on a Wednesday.

Optional/Municipal Holidays:

On these holidays not all workers will enjoy the privilege of having a day of rest, as in the case of Carnival.

- Carnival: Carnival 2024 will be celebrated on a Tuesday, February 13.

- Dia de Santo António: This public holiday will be celebrated on Thursday, June 13, in Lisbon. Therefore, those who live in the Portuguese capital will have the possibility to enjoy a long weekend.

- Feriado de São Pedro: This holiday falls on a Saturday, June 29, for the inhabitants who live in Sintra.

- Dia de São João: This celebration will occur on June 24, in Porto, Braga and Tavira, taking place on a Monday, another opportunity to enjoy a long weekend.

Holidays in the Autonomous Regions:

- The inhabitants of the Autonomous Region of Madeira will be able to rest on July 1, Monday, as it is a holiday in which Madeira’s autonomy is celebrated.

- Dia da Cidade do Funchal will take place on August 21, Wednesday.

- The regional holiday in the Azores, Dia da Região Autónoma, usually occurs on Pentecost Monday, which in 2024 falls on May 20, this day in honour of Espírito Santo, famous throughout the archipelago.
