An iceberg that calved from Antarctica’s Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in 1986 has long drifted in waters cold enough to delay the melting that eventually claims all icebergs from polar regions.

However, it is now breaking apart rapidly, shrinking to 1,700 square kilometres while surrounded by above-freezing seas.
Once the size of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, it has occasionally held the title of the “biggest iceberg”, temporarily losing it to others that drift too far north and melt more quickly.
