"Portugal must continue to be a welcoming country, but it also needs to ensure mechanisms for controlling and monitoring those entering the country. The government aims to strengthen border control, particularly through the implementation of the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders, a PSP unit responsible for controlling airport borders, returns, and monitoring the stay of foreigners in national territory," the document states.
The 2026 State Budget proposal, submitted to the Assembly of the Republic, reports on the completion of the new Temporary Installation Centers and Similar Spaces that will "optimize the migrant screening model at the external borders of the European Union, in close coordination with European commitments on migration and asylum."
"Preventing and combating illegal immigration and human trafficking, therefore, requires strengthening integrated action on the ground, mobilizing security forces and services, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, and other regulatory entities, in a framework of operational cooperation and victim protection," the document states.
