"With the modernisation of Terminal 2 now complete, the Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, will inaugurate it in January," said José Luís Arnaut, in Macau.
The official pointed to these improvement works as a complete modernisation of this structure, recalling that at this stage they are already developing "an important project, which is to create ten new direct access gates in the continuation between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2".
"In other words, better quality and more space will be created. The existing spaces will be increased by a third," he also said at the 50th National Congress of the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT).
On September 30, the State Secretary for Infrastructure, Hugo Espírito Santo, stated that the improvement works on Terminal 2 of Humberto Delgado Airport would be completed in October.
The works in question aim to improve the quality of service.

I love it when politicians come to inaugurate changes, when they are about 3 years late and missed the boat completely. How self-obsessed are they?
Current government is at least trying - but politicians should not think they make changes because they come to cut ribbons!
Lisbon's airport is 3rd World, at best, with infrastructure that failed 5 years ago - I hope they walk passed the stench of sewage and overflowing toilets on their way to inaugurate and cut ribbons at the "not yet adequate" EU border system that is not working properly. And then they can actually get down to employing a full team of Immigration officers to provide the services needed to process the volume of people standing in line, (with many fainting or standing exhausted in line with kids for 2 hours). I have personally helped 3 passengers and 2 families on my arrival in the last 6 months.
Let's be clear - the Immigration officers and the security personnel manning these points are absolute saints - thank goodness they are genuine Portuguese; I do not know how they are so even-handed, friendly and thorough, when they know that their management is incompetent, their government processes are in disarray - with a resident visa system that is broken and cannot issue resident cards on time.
Learn from successful destinations - Government, make the changes needed, institute quick and effective systems, see waiting times drop from +1 Hour to 5 minutes, then come and cut the ribbon - stop "grandstanding" on the basis of a promise.

Something drastic needs to be done about Lisbon's airport...it's been lagging behind for decades! The fact that we are still expected to board and deplane up and down stairs, and board buses, is so 1960s. When I last flew into LIS in October, it was nothing short of a debacle. There were traffic jams and it took almost 30 minutes to even get into the terminal. Hopefully, the renovations will bring the airport into the 21st century, because I am seriously considering flying into Spain when I next come to Portugal, and taking a train unless and until I can get flights from the US directly into Faro outside of high season.
