With demand for flights registering a 10% increase for the end of 2025 compared to the previous year, a considerable portion of Europeans who want to spend New Year's Eve away from home are considering Portugal, placing our country in fourth place among the most sought-after destinations, after Spain, Italy, and France, but ahead of the United Kingdom and Germany, according to Jetcost's analysis.
Data analysing flight search results between December 26, 2025, and January 4, 2026, indicate that a large majority opt for Lisbon, whose attractions continue to enchant European tourists, especially Spaniards, Italians, and Germans, reveals the analysis, as it occupies the first position in terms of searches for the British and French, appearing second for the Dutch, according to a report by Publituris.
Another Portuguese destination that combines the attraction of a large city with its renowned cultural and gastronomic richness is Porto, the most sought-after city by French travellers, the second by Spaniards, Germans, and Italians, and the third by British and Dutch.
Faro, gateway to the Algarve, is the most sought-after destination by the English and Dutch, the third by the French, the fourth by Germans and Italians, and the fifth by the Spanish.
As for the islands, Madeira seems to be the favourite among European tourists, as it is the third most chosen by Spaniards, Germans, and Italians, and in fourth place by the English, French, and Dutch. The other The large island of Porto Santo, in the archipelago, ranks sixth among the preferences of French, German, British, and Italian tourists, and seventh among Spanish and Dutch tourists.
On the other hand, in the Azores Islands, São Miguel Island ranks fourth in terms of preference for Spaniards, fifth for French, British, German, and Italian tourists, and sixth for Dutch tourists, followed by Terceira, chosen in sixth position by Spaniards, seventh by French, British, and Italian tourists, and ninth by Dutch and German tourists.
The islands of Pico, Faial, Flores, and Santa Maria are also among the favourites of European tourists to welcome the year 2026.
As for the Portuguese, the preferences for capitals and large cities of the main countries are led by Paris (1), followed by London (3), Madrid (4), Barcelona (5), Rome (9), and Amsterdam (10).
Domestically, the preferences go to Madeira, followed by Porto, São Miguel, and Lisbon (8).
