According to data from the Ministry of Justice, Maria and Francisco continue to be the preferred names of the Portuguese, with a total of 4,791 girls receiving the first name, while 1,495 new baby boys in Portugal received the second name.
In the list of most chosen girls' names, Alice (1,195) and Leonor (1,146) are also in the top 3. Maria is the favourite with a large advantage over the second choice.
Compared to last year's choices, Leonor is the name that has grown the most in parents' preferences, having moved from 5th to third place.
Margarida and Beatriz have left the list and given way to Olivia and Francisca.
For boys, the top 3 is more balanced. In second place is the name Tomás (1,318) and in third Duarte (1,256). Santiago is no longer on this list this year, having given way to the name Martim.
The list of favourite girls' names also includes Matilde, Benedita, Aurora, and Olivia. For boys, Afonso and Vicente complete the list of the five most chosen names.
The data revealed now accounts for name choices made up to November 30th.
