Following a UK-EU agreement in May 2025, Faro became the first EU airport to offer e-gates to British passport holders. The automated system uses facial recognition technology, allowing passengers to clear immigration in under 20 seconds. The e-gates are now operational and functioning well, processing travellers efficiently.
While the initial rollout had some teething problems, the system has since operated consistently. The improvement is remarkable compared to the previously challenging conditions of 2024. Whether arriving or departing, connecting through Faro to any destination is now becoming a smooth, streamlined experience. It’s a welcome change that’s making the Algarve a reliable gateway for the millions of travellers passing through.

It's off season. Dead of winter. Not even 10% the travel of when it backs up.
This is not a true test. Only July and August will tell.

What this article fails to mention is that Ms Heskin was roaring drunk when she wrote this fluff piece, and that her recollections may be a little hazy.

Which article is correct? Smooth sailing at Faro Airport or Queues Cause Concern in the article immediately below this one? Sloppy journalism?

You're basing this on observations In February???? Let's see how things are in July before declaring victory.

I am sorry but whoever wrote that has not been in and out of Faro 32 times in the last 3 months. Considering there’s very few flights the organisation at passport control is shocking. Half the time EGates aren’t open. Sometimes they start doing biometrics collection on people not done yet whilst leaving some who have in massive queues. Passports still being stamped …, the list goes on. If it stays like this then the summer will be considerably worse than last year.
