According to Plataforma Media, the funding will focus on restoring affected land, supporting reforestation efforts, and helping landowners who may lose income when agricultural land is converted into forest.
The aid will be provided through direct grants, with payments spread over several years to encourage long-term investment and sustainable forest management. The programme is also aimed at strengthening resilience against future risks, particularly wildfires, which have repeatedly impacted rural areas across Portugal.
Officials say the measure is necessary to support recovery while ensuring fair competition within the EU.
Forest management is seen as a key part of Europe’s broader climate strategy, helping reduce emissions and protect biodiversity.
The scheme is expected to run until 2029 and will be partly funded through EU rural development funds.
