The Spanish bank said in a statement that the Barclays Portugal retail business had a credit portfolio of € 4.88 billion in assets managed in off-balance sheet accounts, a network of 84 branches, a staff of about 1,000 and 185,000 customers, including 20,300 companies.
Barclays’ investment bank and card activities are not included in the deal as well as a small number of corporate customers who will continue to be managed by Barclays.
The deal also includes the life insurance and pensions in Portugal, with Bankinter Seguros de Vida, a company that is 50 percent controlled by Bankinter and by Mapfre, taking over the Barclays’ operation in Portugal for €75 million. The Portuguese branch of Barclays Vida y Pensiones, which manages more than a billion in assets earned €150 million in premiums and made €12.7 million in net profit in 2014.
