Some criticism has been levelled at the extent of the fines, which are proposed to start at 500 euros for individuals and reach 9,000 euros for companies who fail to adequately set up areas for workers to extinguish their cigarettes.
According to estimates, around 7,000 cigarette butts are left on streets and sidewalks every minute in Portugal.

Finally! Hopefully dog fouling and spitting won't be far behind.

Well done lawmakers. I'm irritated by smokers. I dont want to breathe their foul toxic smoke and I dont want to tread on their disgusting cigarette butts.

I am pleased to see this news because cigarette butts thrown carelessly if still lit can cause wildfires, and otherwise are still very bad because they are a source of plastic pollution and toxins which end up in the environment killing wildlife!
