Information from the national civil protection authority said 153 fire-fighters and 51 vehicles were involved in the action.
Reports have also emerged of people being evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.
The fire in Monchique is currently rated as the only important occurrence” in terms of fire in the country.
During the course of last night the priority was to protect homes in the area, the head of operations on the ground, Richard Marques, said.
Groups of fire-fighters from Lisbon and Évora are expected to join the efforts in Monchique during the course of the day as thermometers climbed to close to 40 degrees Celsius in the Algarve.
