Portugal’s GNR National Republican Guard police last Friday seized 4,400 kilos of sardines, worth around €26,000, in the district of Matosinhos, in northern Portugal.

The police force revealed in a statement that officers from the Coastal Control Unit detected 273 boxes of sardines, without a certificate of origin, in a warehouse in the district.
Police then identified a 55-year-old man, the alleged perpetrator, who is subject to a fine of up to €44,890, according to the note. The fish seized were donated to several social welfare institutions.
