'Golden visa' scheme to be monitored, improved

Portugal has said the golden residence permit programme is to be improved and monitored, following recommendations from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The government has however denied that programme is aimed at giving citizenship to foreigners, but residence permits instead.

Since its introduction in 2012, the golden visa programme has allowed the country to attract 4.5 billion euros in investments.

Portuguese land should not be denied to the Portuguese people through this scheme as has happened in Ethiopia where land has been bought up by foreigners.
