When leaving your permanent residence for a vacation you can extend your insurance policy to cover your personal effects, valuables and electronic portable devices away from the home on an ‘all-risks’ basis. Home plus provides this cover on a worldwide basis not only for theft but as the cover states for all risks such as loss and accidental damage. In order to cover certain items such as the valuables and electronic devices all you need to do is provide a full description of each item with their specification, make, model and serial numbers along with a proof of purchase in the form of a receipt or valuation.
Some homeowners may opt to rent their home whilst away and ‘Home Plus’ optional cover is offered for when you let your permanent home for up to a maximum of 90 days a year, automatically extending your legal liability as property owner covering damage and or injury to your tenants. Whilst any loss or damage caused by tenants is a standard exclusion ‘Home Plus’ automatically provides a €1,000 limit in respect of accidental damage to fixed glass, sanitary ware, and ceramic hobs whilst your property is let.
Furthermore, if you let your home, your tenants’ own possessions and money are automatically excluded so they need to be made aware of any restrictions on their own travel or home insurance.
It is important to stress the importance of ensuring that the property is left in a secure manner to protect your contents and, if let, tenants possessions. As with all other insurers theft is only covered providing there is evidence of forcible and violent entry . ‘Home Plus’ do however provide a limit of theft cover up to a maximum of €500 when theft has been gained via an unlocked door or open window.
