The local authority justified their decision to keep the beaches manned for a few more weeks as being due to the “good weather” and a continuing “strong demand”.
“Given the favourable weather conditions and the strong flux of beachgoers that we have seen on the county’s beaches in recent days, Cascais Town Hall informs that, for the safety and comfort of all locals and those who visit us, we have decided to prolong surveillance on all beaches indefinitely”, a statement from the town hall explained.
In the statement, Cascais council said it would “fully cover” the costs of the measure, which every fortnight is estimated to cost in the region of €24,000.
“Cascais was the first county in the country to kick off beach season, on 1 May, and was the last to finish, on 30 September. But, seeing as it is not the good weather that adapts to safety conditions, rather the opposite, we think it is important to extend the monitoring period on beaches until the weather warrants it.”
