The airport’s main runway was shut after a TAP Express flight (TP 1971) from Porto burst a tyre upon landing on Saturday night at 22.35 and was left stranded on the tarmac.

No injuries were reported on the ATR 72 aircraft which was carrying 20 passengers.

A secondary runway was opened for departures shortly after midnight.

Airport authority ANA issued a statement on its website revealing that following an “aircraft accident within the airport perimeter, emergency procedures were put into effect.”

The accident is currently being investigated by the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft Accidents (GPIAA).
