“Piracy has a significant impact on the safety of people and goods in maritime transport on which 90% of world trade depends," said Ana Paula Vitorino, Minister of the Sea.

Under the new law, shipowners may hire private security companies (Portuguese or foreign) who can use arms and ammunition suitable for the protection of ships.

According to Ana Paula Vitorino, the approval of this decree-law "meets needs long identified by the sector".
