According to the city council, the 98 processes for new tourist developments are in different states of processing: 23 percent in progress, 29 percent with architectural project approved, 9 percent with final decision and in the remaining 39 percent, the works permit expires.

Of the 98 licensing processes, 84 relate to hotels, 13 to tourist apartments and only one to housing tourism.

Based on the information gathered, it is also concluded that 86 percent of the processes are for hotels, aggregating 92 percent of the total expected capacity, with the bet to concentrate mainly on four-star (52 percent) and five-star (19 percent) units, representing 82 percent of the new hotel units expected in the city.

The document that aims to monitor and characterise the licensing of tourist developments, documenting the prospect of growth of supply in the city, also states that these projects could represent an estimated investment of almost 193 million Euros.

According to advanced data in the July bulletin, the implementation of ongoing processes for new tourist developments will allow an 84 percent increase in hotel supply in the city, rising from 117 to 215 units.

The lodging capacity will increase from the current 13,761 to 21,488 beds, representing a growth of 56 percent.

The data shows that the hotels of the highest segment have the highest growth, five stars (133 percent) and four stars (119 percent). Also noteworthy are the one-star units with an expected growth of 75 percent. The same is true for the capacity of these units, with forecasted increases of 74 percent in four-star and 49 percent in five-star hotels, while one-star hotels could register an increase of 45 percent.

The new tourist developments will increase the offer with special incidence in the parishes of Santo Ildefonso (33 percent), Cedofeita (12 percent), Bonfim (11 percent) and Sé (11 percent), which represent 67 percent of the total of the new hotel units foreseen. In Aldoar there is no tourist development, nor is any planned.

In the centre of the city, these new developments are located essentially in Aliados (six), Gonçalo Cristóvão (six), Bonjardim (five), Santa Catarina (four), besides D. João IV (three), Infante D. Henrique (three), and finally, Alexandre Herculano, Duque de Loulé, Entreparedes, Flores, Monchique and S. João with two developments each.

These arteries may concentrate 40 percent of the total hotel offer planned, notes the bulletin whose data are supported by the elements in the processes underway in the Municipal Department of Urban Management and the information available at the Portal of Tourism of Portugal - National Register of Tourist Developments (RNET).
