The project is based in Lisbon and is dependent on community spirit. Located in Alvito, Alcântara, the communal fridge will be stocked with food by local companies and grocery stores and is open to anyone who is hungry and needs something to eat.
Those behind the project have promised the ‘community fridge’ is just part of a greater wave of solidarity.
The fridge will be stocked daily with perishable goods, from fresh fruit and vegetable to yoghurts and ready-made meals, supplied by whoever wants to donate them, and are available to the needy.
No identification, paperwork or any type of bureaucracy is necessary for access to the food.
The initiative counts on the support of other social welfare projects and institutions, such as the Refood organisation, as well as local business and residents, some of whom have their own allotments or garden plots and have pledged to donate products as and when they can.
The idea is not only to help the hungry but also to promote respect among those who use the fridge, by taking only as much as is needed and leaving the rest for others.
