The INE said that at 31 December 2014, Portugal’s resident population was 10,374,822 inhabitants, 52,479 fewer than a year earlier, “equivalent to a negative growth of 0.5% and migration figures".


Even though the number of deaths fell in 2014, the number of live births fell faster with a final balance of 22,423 fewer inhabitants.


Migration figures showed that there were 30,056 fewer inhabitants because of migrations with 19,516 permanent immigrants, but 49,572 emigrants.
