Portugal's government and Sines Port Authority have reached an agreement over expansion and completion of the third phase of the Terminal XXI expansion works, at a cost of €547 million.

Terminal XXI will have a 1,950-metre quay, and a 60-hectare storage area (currently 42 hectares), which will permit the installed capacity to be increased from the current 2.3 million TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) containers to 4.1 million.

Nine more cranes, 30 stradle-carriers and transportation equipment will also be purchased.

Terminal XXI is currently the largest employer in the region, with more than 1,000 jobs. This agreement will strengthen job creation and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region and the country.
