The preventive warning system by mobile phone was activated in the morning, with messages arriving in Portuguese and in English to 1,560,267 people who were in both districts, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) said in a statement.

ANEPC on 2 August put the districts of Santarém and Faro on alert for red-level readiness due to the increased risk of forest fire due to the strong wind.

Due to the "significant increase" in the risk of rural fire, mainland Portugal is on alert until 4 August.
