The 8.0% increase in Portugal puts it near the top of the ranking of countries with the biggest increases, after Latvia (12% to 4.9 million), Slovenia (11.3% to 11.9 million) and Croatia (10.6% to 86.1 million).

The European statistics office said that in 2017, Portuguese tourist establishments welcomed 71.3 million tourists and two out of every three (68%) were non-residents.

Spain still leads the way in stays with 471.4 million (3.6% more than in 2016), followed by France (6.6% to 431.3 million) and Italy (5.4% to 424.7 million).
