A German tourist in his 50’s was saved from drowning after becoming caught in a riptide on a beach in the Eastern Algarve on Wednesday thanks to the quick intervention of lifeguards and the coastguard.

The man had been swimming in the sea on an unsupervised stretch of the Fuzeta-Mar beach in Olhão at around noon when he got into trouble in the water.
The man’s wife raised the alarm and rescuers were called in from the nearest manned beach.

He was unconscious when he was pulled from the water but was saved thanks to the lifeguards and an off-duty nurse who was also on the beach.
