On Tuesday a 65-year-old fisherman died after falling around three metres into the Atlantic water.
Speaking to Lusa News Agency, Lagos Port Captain Carvalho Pinto said the accident happened on Tuesday lunchtime and the man was pulled from the water by a tourist boat around six minutes after falling in, but died despite efforts to revive him after going into cardiac arrest.
It is the second such incident in three days in that area.
Another fisherman has been missing since Sunday after falling into the sea at Torre da Aspa, in Vila do Bispo.
A search and rescue operation was immediately launched in that case both on land and sea, although at the time of going to press on Thursday the missing man had yet to be found.
Portugal’s Maritime Authority recommends people partaking in recreational fishing, which, across the Algarve at least, mostly takes place along the region’s jagged cliffs, wear life vests to minimise dangers related to the activity.
