The United Nations (UN) secretary general, António Guterres, has highlighted the contribution migrants make to society. ‘When managed appropriately’ migrants almost always ‘benefit both [original and host] countries’ said Guterres during the EurAfrican Forum in Cascais.

The forum in question debated African-European relations over the course of two days, with the UN official highlighting Africa’s future role in terms of investment and innovation, especially within the context of increasing populations and dynamic economies.

Guterres also stated that progress is being made in the ‘2030Sustainable Development Goals Agenda, and in the 2063 African Agenda, for the combat of climate change and the promotion of peace and development’.

The EurAfrican Forum was organised by the Portuguese Diaspora Council and ended with conclusive remarks of the former President of the European Comission, José Manuel Durão Barroso.
