According to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), all of mainland Portugal’s districts, alongside the Madeira and Azores archipelagos, are at ‘very high risk’ of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVA) - The only exception being the Terceira Island, with only ‘high’ levels of UVA.

The IPMA advises the population to avoid direct sunlight altogether in places where there is ‘extreme risk’ of radiation, whereas in places where the risk is considered ‘very high’ people should wear UV-filtered sunglasses, t-shirts, use a parasol, sunscreen and avoid direct exposure of children to sunlight.
