According to the weather office, yellow alerts have been issued for the regions of Faro, Lisbon, Guarda, Bragança, Vila Real, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja, Setúbal, Santarém and Leiria.

Particular concern has been expressed at overnight temperatures, with thermometers expected to drop to sub-zero levels for many parts of the country, with frost a common feature as it has been in recent days.

With cloudy weather returning at the end of next week, minimum temperatures are expected to rise, with clear skies in recent days helping with day time temperatures but having the opposite effect overnight.

Fog is forecast to linger across inland areas.

The weather warning is in effect until Friday.
