However there was no reference to year-on-year fluctuations but a statement issued this week did emphasise that only one festival - Curtas de Vila do Conde – would receive the full amount requested in this case €100,000.
All the remaining venues would receive a proportion of the funding requested for the three-year period from 2015.
Two of Lisbon’s most significant film festivals are among the other major recipients in funding, the documentary festival Doclisboa, with €97,500, and the showcase of independent film, IndieLisboa, with €94,000.
Among the others in receipt of funding, although in some instances getting less than half that they bid for, are the cartoon festival Monstra, horror in Oporto’s Fantasporto, the gay film festival Queer, and the Viana Film Cinema.
Three candidates did not get funding from the Institute: the Italian Cinema Festival, Fuso, for video art and the Pan-Azorean International Film Festival.
They may have fallen victim to a minimum audience criteria ranging from between 2,500 and 5,000 festival goers, in accordance with the surrounding population although the jury took into consideration other factors such as the track record, programming and the inclusion of Portuguese works.
