A Portuguese contingent of 146 military personnel, mostly marines will participate for the third time in a NATO mission in Lithuania, between June and August, a source from the Navy told the Lusa news agency .

After presences in that Baltic country in 2018 and 2019, the "Marines" return within the framework of "reassurance measures" of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), intended to mark presence on the eastern borders of the European continent, for reconnaissance of the terrain and also as a form of deterrence against possible threats, particularly by the power Russia.

The Marine Corps and the elements of the detachment of divers-sappers No. 1 will have at their disposal eight armoured vehicles "HMMWV" (High Mobility Multipurpose Motor Vehicle), lent by the Army, and are doing the final readiness training between 20 and 23 April on the beaches and dune systems of Troia and Pinheiro da Cruz.

The exercises focus on "techniques, tactics and procedures in the scope of amphibious operations, as well as the conduct of offensive action, with a focus on combat shooting and close combat," according to a Navy statement.

Also in Lithuania and still during this year, the Air Force has planned to repeat the employment of four F-16 fighter planes and a total of 85 military personnel, also for three months, as part of the NATO mission of "enhanced air policing" of the skies of the Atlantic Alliance in Europe.
