The daily average in Portugal increased from the 188 cases verified last week. Among the countries in the European Union, Cyprus has the highest daily average, with 605 cases, followed by Spain (431), France (341), Ireland (301) and Greece (264). The European Union average on this indicator decreased slightly from 155 to 154, while the world average rose from 76 to 80.
Eastern European countries have the lowest daily averages of new cases: Poland, with just over four cases, Hungary (five), Slovakia (nine) and Romania (12). Although no longer in the EU, the UK is among the European countries with the highest numbers and an average of 401 daily cases per million population. In the world, the countries with more than one million inhabitants with the highest daily averages of new cases are Botswana (965), Georgia (921), Cuba (806), Malaysia (583) and Mongolia (455).
As for the average of daily deaths per million inhabitants in the last seven days, Portugal moves from fourth to third country in the Union in this indicator, with an average of 1.37, increasing from 0.73 last Monday. Cyprus (3.06), and Spain (1.59) top this list, with the European Union average at 0.51 and the world average at 1.22. Worldwide, the worst in this indicator are Tunisia (10.4), Georgia (8.3), Botswana (8.2), Malaysia (7.6) and Namibia (7.5).
Covid-19 has caused at least 4,294,735 deaths worldwide, out of more than 202.8 million infections with the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest report by the Agence France-Presse. In Portugal, since March 2020, 17,467 people have died and 986,967 cases of infection have been registered, according to the Directorate-General for Health.
This is only half the story. The number of tests in the various countries are very relevant in this case. As are the number of cycles per test. The more testing (and the more cycles), the higher the number of "positives".
