“Government is doing what it has to do”

The President of the Republic has said that “the Government is doing what it has to do” to mitigate the economic impacts of the war in Ukraine, stating that “new solutions” are needed for “new problems”.

“It's a race against time: the Government is doing what it has to do, which is, in the face of new problems, finding new solutions”, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The President of the Republic was speaking to journalists during a visit to the Lisbon Tourism Exchange, which takes place between today and March 20 at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), in which he was accompanied by the Minister of State, Economy and Digital Transition, Pedro Siza Vieira.

Rebelo de Sousa agreed that the “solution now is not exactly the 'lay-off', it could be another solution that goes directly to the companies and helps them to react immediately to the situation created by the war”.

“I think that the Ministry of Economy has done a very important job in preparing measures. One part depends on Europe, another part depends on us, and even what depends on Europe is then executed by Portugal, by each country”, he recalled.

Dramatically reduce the ridiculous dependence on seasonal low paying tourist industry jobs
Start thinking smart.The Algarve has the best climate on the planet with over 300 days of sunshine.A fantastic place for families to live and work.
A reset in thinking is needed.
One that will benefit the many and not just the few vested interests that take a lot but actually provide nothing more than seasonal low paid jobs.

You are spot on James! The problem being that Portugal has no interest in an educated, professionally well trained population. Those who are, must go abroad for a liveable salary. It is shocking and so sad to see how Portugal continues stuck in a time warp, fostering outdated industries and keeping its people sinking in poverty and lack of education (e.g. there is zero civid education in Portugal).
