The drug, packed in 215 packages, was detected during a security inspection carried out by the police authorities on the sailboat, after the boat was towed by the police to the port of Vilamoura due to a malfunction, indicated the National Maritime Authority (AMN) in a statement.

According to the AMN, the sailboat, with two crew on board, which was anchored off Vilamoura, was detected at 1:20 pm on Monday, during an inspection operation at sea carried out by the Maritime Police of Portimão.

Due to the malfunction and “for reasons of safety for navigation”, the police proceeded to tow the sailboat to the port of Vilamoura.

Maritime Police carried out an inspection “to ensure safety and prevent its possible sinking”, during which it detected “a total of about 108 kilograms of hashish inside the vessel”.

The 215 packages of drugs were seized and handed over to the Judiciary Police, and the two crew members of the sailboat were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.
