Here is what Rob had to say about the race “it was somewhat of a rush to get there and we started in a cold fog! The peloton went out at rocket speed. I looked down and I was doing 45-50kmph. I was not going to be able to continue at this speed for 62km.” Further explaining that “I managed to stick with them for a while but with two short sharp horrible climbs on each circuit lap I had climbed over 640m in height. My race ended on the ninth lap at 50km and I completed 50km in 1:47:01 and averaged 28.3 kmph.” “Everyone stopped after the winner crossed the line. I have to be impressed by so many strong athletes competing. Being positive I continue to try hard. Raising awareness certainly worked and many new friends were made on the way, which is fantastic.”

Rob added “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported me, either by waving and beeping their horns as they passed by whilst out cycling or for donations that were very kindly given. Anyone wishing to continue donating can do so by visiting https://algarvefire.info please ref: FTE Cycling 2022 for the Bombeiros here in Algarve or alternatively visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robert-evans56 which is for the Firefighters Charity in UK.

“I cycle now to encourage others to change their energy if feeling low or down. Walk, run, cycle, dance, do what you need to do to make yourself happy. Positivity is infectious and we all contribute to helping ourselves and others. If you have purchased a book or 3, can I ask that you send me a photo of you holding them and of you smiling. Smiles are infectious and full of feel-good energy.”

Rob also told me that he is moving towards Obidos for a year as his family want to explore Portugal but he plans to come back to the Algarve regularly to compete and will be arranging a cycling challenge next year ‘Chasing the Sun’ from the Spanish border to Sagres which will to raise awareness and funds for Alerta and UK firefighters.
