The funding for updating the Citizen Card is estimated at nine million euros, part of an allocation from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) worth 42.5 million euros for the registration area, said Catarina Sarmento e Castro at the end of a visit to the Citizen's Card services.

"These nine million euros are for a new CC that we are going to launch by the end of the year. This CC will have enhanced security and, therefore, we will have one of the safest CCs in the world. It will be one of the cards with the most features ".

According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice, the new CC will have "a new 'design', new electronic features and technology", making it possible to activate the CC with "recourse to biometrics, through the use of secure mechanisms and in compliance with the provisions set out in the European regulations".
