Swimming pool water charge plan

In response to drought conditions in the Algarve region, the government plans to raise water tariffs for individuals filling domestic swimming pools and reduce irrigation in the eastern Sotovento area by 20 percent.

These measures may lead to potential water cuts at three golf courses in the coming weeks. The government further aims to decrease groundwater usage, which currently supports 70 percent of the region’s citrus fruit production.

Fair enough, but not sure this will be policed. It seems that most swimming pools in Portugal are illegal/without planning permission. I for example have a very large paddling pool which I dismantle in the winter.

I know for a fact that I would not be the first to comment on this. Which leads me to believe that you only promulgate what suits your media agenda, and if this is promulgated I will be amazed,but all my friends will be aware Portuguese and Expat.

Yet the local authorities and government promote more tourism, hotel building and golf course creation. Not only is the building work water-intensive, the continued demands for water once the new facilities are being used places unsustainable pressure on the water supply. With climate change continuing and predicted reduction of the volume of rain falling, the situation is going to get far worse. We all need to reduce our water usage - smaller pools, less showering, fewer golf courses and hotels and ultimately less people!

If you have a pool, you already pay more house tax and you also pay for the water to fill it up, so how can they add any additional charge. What they could do is ban the building of more pools.
