If their leaves remained, the icy weather would cause the water in the leaves to expand and break, thus stopping photosynthesis. Many of the leaves are diseased and damaged at the end of summer and so dropping the leaves gives the trees a fresh start in the spring. We can learn a lot from this process.

Autumn is a time to make preparation for winter which will soon be upon us. Physically, we may be collecting apples and berries from the gardens and the remaining vegetables ready for the darker days coming, but emotionally it’s good to prepare too.

Autumn is a time for taking stock of our lives. How am I feeling? Are there any changes I can make to enable me to feel better about myself, my situation, and my life?

It might be time to shed anything which isn’t for our highest good. That may mean unhealthy food, which we are finding reacts with our bodies, or habits which don’t nurture and nourish us, such as too much scrolling online or something which harms us such as vaping or drinking too much.

Instead, you could replace these with something which brings you joy. How about scheduling in a weekly walk or taking time to meet with friends for a chat?

These changes can also include relationships or friendships, (which can be difficult to get our heads around when we first start thinking like this). Do you have a friend, who when their name comes up on your phone, you ignore rather than answer, because you know that their moaning affects you for a long time afterwards? (I’m not talking about friends in need or who are going through a tough time, I’m talking about those people whose glass is perpetually half empty or even completely empty in their eyes). You could begin to protect yourself from their energy by you deciding when to ring them when you’re ready and in the right frame of mind, knowing that you are being a good friend, but without it being detrimental to your wellbeing. This means the interaction is on your terms, and you can decide on how long the phone call will be. You are in control and can protect yourself.

Taking control of our lives is a powerful thing and these first steps will generate great benefits. Try it and see!
