The Instagram-developed software is used for text update sharing and participating in public discussions.

Launched in July in the US, Meta postponed its EU rollout to assess the effects of recent legal changes pertaining to online platforms, such as the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act.

In connection with the introduction of Threads, Meta has been in contact with the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) in recent weeks.

Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner of the DPC, stated, “We wrote to them with several data protection recommendations in November.”

“We understand that Meta have since made some changes to Threads prior to this launch and the DPC will continue to monitor and engage with Meta, as required,” stated Doyle.

Users in Ireland and the rest of the EU can now opt to use Threads without a profile or to build a profile that is linked to their Instagram account.

Users content and a profile on the app may still view material on Threads, search for accounts, report content, and share content by copying links or sharing information on platforms, but they cannot engage with content.

Meta has added a web version, a following feed, and the option to amend a post to Threads since the app's July debut.
