The government has given public sector workers the day off and there are some companies that also choose to do this, however, it is not a mandatory public holiday.

"Did you know that Carnival Tuesday is only a holiday when this is provided for in a collective work regulation or in an individual employment contract?" reveals the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), in a publication shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The Government has already announced that it will grant time off on Carnival Tuesday to workers who perform public functions in State services, according to an order signed by Prime Minister, António Costa.

As in previous years, the Prime Minister once again highlights that "although Carnival Tuesday is not on the list of mandatory holidays stipulated by law, there is a tradition in Portugal of organising parties during this period".
