Belgian cyclist Gerben Thijsen (Intermarché-Wanty) is the first leader of the Volta ao Algarve, after winning the sprint in the first stage, which connected Portimão to Lagos.

At the end of the 200.8 kilometer race, Thijsen won in 4:52.04 hours, the same time as the Dutchman Marijn Van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) and the Belgian Jordi Meeus (BORA-hansgrohe), second and third, respectively.
Overall, thanks to the bonuses, Thijsen has a four-second advantage over Van den Berg and six over Meeus.
On Thursday, the second stage connects Lagoa to Alto da Fóia.
