This recertification marks the seventh time Zoomarine has received this distinction, maintaining this credential continuously since becoming one of the first zoos in Europe to obtain it, in 2018. “We have an extraordinarily dedicated, passionate and professional team, who strive daily to ensure all our animals’ well-being. Recognition of this unwavering commitment to our animals by a program as respected as Global Humane Conservation validates our high standards of animal welfare and we are proud to have received this prestigious certification again”, said Dr. Carla Flanagan, Zoological Director at Zoomarine.

To be recognised as Global Humane Certified, Zoomarine was subjected to a rigorous independent assessment which analysed the well-being of the animals at the facility and demonstrated overall excellence in its animal care and welfare practices. This unique process is within the scope of the latest science on the best practices, instructed by respected veterans and experts in the fields of animal welfare, animal science, zoology and ethics, who have decades of experience protecting animals.

“We are excited that Zoomarine continues to meet the standards of the Global Humane Conservation program”, stated Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of Global Humane. “This certification allows for Global Humane to recognise the extensive reach of the animal welfare movement in zoos, aquariums and conservation parks around the world”, he added.

The independent validation process assures visitors that the institution is meeting a high standard of care. This procedure includes the submission of a pre-audit request, followed by an on-site audit which assess animal welfare. The factors considered during the audit are housing, nutrition, water, lighting, shade, sound, activity levels and the training of personnel who interact with the animals, among others. The criteria is specific to each species.
