With a distinguished career in schools across the United Kingdom delivering the Cambridge International Education programme, Tom Caston brings an extensive experience of 25 years in education and a strong vision for the future of Bright International School - Algarve. His journey has been defined by a commitment to academic excellence, student-centred learning and innovative teaching methodologies. At Bright, Tom is leveraging this wealth of experience to nurture an environment that encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. Aligned with the Sharing Education Group’s progressive ethos, Tom is focused on integrating modern educational practices, such as project and inquiry-based learning in open and collaborative learning spaces, to ensure students are well-prepared for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

"As a School Principal and Teacher, I strive to explore diverse and innovative perspectives on education" says Tom. "In my view, Yuval Noah Harari presents a particularly compelling approach to 21st-century education, emphasising the importance of teaching skills rather than memorizing information, especially in today’s digital-driven world where information is easily accessible." Tom adds, “there will always be a requirement to pass on subject knowledge, but we need to develop and strengthen our pupils’ skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. We need to empower them to discern what is relevant, evaluate different perspectives and synthesise knowledge effectively. This will not only prepare them for academic success but also enable them to navigate the uncertain times that lie ahead with confidence and resilience.”

He adds, "To this, we must also emphasise the importance of caring. This involves not only showing compassion in its most obvious sense but also cultivating a sense of purpose in our students — encouraging them to hold firm to their principles and beliefs, even when they are in the minority. In a world where ethics are increasingly clouded, we need our young people to genuinely care about the issues that matter. Our goal should be to embed a warm discernment in them, nurturing kindness and vibrancy as they step into the future. They will not only be resilient in the face of change, but they will also have the potential to create change themselves."

“I want the children at Bright to understand the world around them, and be able to make good, sensible decisions that will bring sustainable outcomes. If they can do this, they will feel more resilient to each challenge presented.”

Tom reflects, "I heard an expression recently: 'There are people who bend under this world, and there are those who create this world.' At Bright, I want to help cultivate individuals who create new worlds for themselves. I believe that our vision aligns beautifully with this goal, guiding each pupil to discover the right pathway to their next stage in life.”

Bright International School - Algarve currently offers the Cambridge Early Years, Primary, and Lower Secondary Programmes, from Pre-Reception to Year 9. The school will continue to expand year by year, reaching the IGCSEs and A Levels, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence and future growth.
