TRIGGER WARNING! Please skip this paragraph if needed, as it talks about the traumatic event of losing my dog, but not in detail. I was at my local sacred site in the morning and I noticed how it was covered with dog poo, so I decided to come back later with my dogs to poo pick with my husband, which we did. While we were there, my little dog got spooked and ran into the fields and then to a road quite a distance away, where she got run over by a car and sadly died (we didn’t see it happen, thank goddess).

This event was so traumatic that I could feel myself beginning to unravel the day after a night of not being able to sleep. I felt unbalanced and broken. Luckily, I had the tools to support me. After a day of doing these practices many times a day, I felt more grounded, so much so that I was able to carry on with my online meditation group that evening, and my in-person groups on the following days.

Grounding

Helps stop the feeling of freefall or feeling out of kilter, being unable to settle or concentrate and allows you to refocus on the present moment and distract yourself from anxious feelings.

This practice can be done anywhere. I do this first thing in the morning, before I get out of bed, and in bed before I go to sleep, as well as at least three times during the day at the moment.

What to do:

  • Stand, sit or lie down.
  • Breath into your heart.
  • Visualise roots growing down from your heart, through your lower body, down your legs and out of the soles of your feet into the depths of the earth below.
  • Imagine these roots spreading outwards, really wide, to anchor and ground you.
  • Then breathe into your heart and visualise big branches growing through your torso and out into the air around you, until they reach way above your head.
  • With every inhale, imagine calming energy working its way through the branches down the central core of your body, helping you relax and centre.
  • Finally, visualise a strong trunk growing in the centre of your body to stabilise and strengthen you

Cleansing

I use this in my bath once a week, usually, but have been doing this every day. Immersing yourself in mineral-rich salt water can help soothe muscle aches, relieve stress, and support skin health.

Ingredients

1 part Epsom Salts (Epsom salt helps stabilise mood and relieve stress, anxiety and depression).

1 part Himalayan bath salts or Celtic sea salt (Bathing in saltwater can assist in drawing out toxins from the body. The trace minerals can promote relaxation and reduce stress).

1 part colloidal oats (adds moisture and soothes sensitive skin).

Mix together and put 2 or 3 handfuls into a warm (not too hot) running bath.

Soak in the bath for as long as you feel is right for you.

Healing

Imagine a big, beautiful sun above your head

With every inhale, draw this golden light through the top of your head, down into the body.

Imagine it going down your torso, into your arms, bringing golden healing, as it removes any stress, trauma, tension and replaces it with a warm, comforting glow.

Draw this light down your back to your legs until you see it come out of your feet.

Send this light anywhere in your body which is holding tension or stress, anywhere which feels painful or tense.

Visualise the stress and tension drifting out of your body and being replaced with a healing warmth.

Then imagine this warm light is washing all over your body.

This practice will enable you to feel calmer and more balanced, as well as lighter in yourself.

These tips have made a massive difference in how I’m feeling. They’re simple, and quick, but effective.

When I compare how I’m doing now to how I have been in the past when there had been traumatic events, I can really see a difference in my ability to cope and heal.

If you’re going through a tricky time at the moment, these practices may prove helpful to you too. But even if life is pretty smooth going, these practices can add an extra dimension of calm and clarity and can really help keep you balanced and anchored.
