Quoted in a statement, the mayor of Tavira, Ana Paula Martins, congratulated the municipality for having strictly followed the Climate Framework Law, having managed to achieve the desired objective: “the active participation of the community, which worked with us in the participatory sessions, as well as in the ‘focus groups’, designed with people who are not normally consulted on these matters”.
The document with the PMAC proposal was presented in February and was in public consultation until April, collecting suggestions that helped to consolidate a plan, composed of 16 measures and 85 priority actions, “fully aligned” with the Climate Framework Law and national and international commitments on environmental matters, as stated in the municipality's note.
According to the Tavira Council, in conjunction with the approval of the PMAC, the Municipal Council for Citizenship and Climate Action (CMCAC) was also created, the first body with this designation in Portugal.
“This council aims to be an open space for participation, dialogue and monitoring of municipal climate policies, encouraging the active participation of all interested citizens”, reads the note.
According to Ana Paula Martins, with these measures, the municipality of Tavira “reinforces its commitment to climate action, sustainability and a more participatory governance that is closer to the people”.
The Tavira Council also states that the Municipal Climate Action Plan is a document, considered “strategic”, that defines the measures and actions that a municipality will implement to combat climate change and its effects.
The plan includes mitigation actions, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and adaptation, to make the territory more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
