One of the new features of this year's campaign is the inclusion of warnings about the dangers of prolonged sun exposure and the promotion of self-protection behaviours, such as staying hydrated, using sunscreen, wearing appropriate clothing, and limiting sun exposure during the hottest hours.

The initiative is in collaboration with Farmácia Albufeira and the local Health Authority.

Titled "Nature Doesn't Warn. Stay Away from Cliffs," the campaign involves distributing informational leaflets in Portuguese and English on the municipality's beaches, while municipal technicians raise awareness among beachgoers about the risks and accidents in cliff areas, as well as ways to avoid them.

The campaign includes the municipality's 25 beaches. Until the end of August, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., technicians from the Municipal Civil Protection Service will also visit Manuel Lourenço and Coelha (August 12), Evaristo and Castelo (August 14), Alemães and Forte de São João (August 19), Oura (August 22), Aveiros and Oura-Leste (August 26), and Salgados (August 29).

For the organisations involved in this initiative, the cliff campaign represents "an excellent opportunity to strengthen the community's health promotion mission, thus reaching out to citizens and visitors who frequent Albufeira's beaches during the summer season, providing useful and relevant information that can make a difference in their well-being and safety."

According to the Albufeira city council, vacationers have warmly welcomed the recommendations of the technicians involved, heeding the advice and various pieces of information.

It was on Maria Luísa beach, on the Albufeira coast, that, on August 22, 2009, five people died (and three others were injured) after being buried by a falling cliff.

This accident prompted authorities to take measures to raise awareness of the dangers of cliff collapses on the beaches of the Western Algarve, including by posting signs warning of the risk.

Even so, it is common to see people on the beaches next to the cliffs, enjoying the shade, sometimes even under signs warning of danger.
