Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) said in a statement that maintenance work will be carried out on the bridge's pavement and expansion joints.
IP said "paving and expansion joint maintenance work will be carried out on the north and south viaducts of the Eiffel Bridge on National Road (EN) 13 in Viana do Castelo."
"The execution of these works, which will take place exclusively at night, requires the closure of vehicle traffic on the Eiffel Bridge between September 1st and 5th, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m."
As an alternative, IP proposes that "the traffic diversion be made via the new bridge on the A28 highway, which will be signposted in both directions of the EN13, at kilometre 65.460 and kilometre 66.645."
The bridge is 645 meters long and consists of two metal decks: the upper deck for vehicles and pedestrians, and the lower deck for rail traffic.
Inaugurated in 1878, the metal bridge over the Lima River was designed by the Eiffel House in Paris and replaced the wooden bridge that connected the then São Bento square to the left bank of the Lima River, next to the São Lourenço chapel, in the parish of Darque.
The 146-year-old metal bridge over the Lima River has been in the process of being declared a National Monument since 2019.
