Holidu, a vacation rental booking portal, analysed Google Maps user review data for 100 of Europe's busiest airports to compile its annual list of the 25 best and worst.
On this list, with over 100,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.4 on Google Maps, Istanbul Airport (Turkey) is the highest-rated airport in Europe, maintaining its position from last year. The airport has been praised for its modernity and size, with its spacious and clean terminals, as well as its contemporary architectural design that impresses visitors. Reviewers also frequently praise the airport's organization, highlighting the automatic ticketing barriers, clear signage, and well-planned layout that help reduce queues and confusion.
Second place goes to Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, with over 30,000 reviews and a 4.4 rating on Google Maps. Despite handling a large number of travellers, it is frequently praised for its well-planned terminals and short wait times. A new terminal building, multiple self-service check-in counters, and a fast-track security line reduce wait times and ensure a smooth journey through the airport. The speed with which staff handle check-in and security is also a highlight for passengers.
Next comes Helsinki Airport (Finland), which rose five places compared to the previous year, Athens International Airport (Greece), and Zurich Airport (Switzerland).
In the bottom five, Heraklion International Airport (Crete, Greece), often described as "overcrowded" and too small to handle the growing number of tourists.
With a rating of 3.0 on Google Maps, Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (France) is considered the second-worst airport in Europe. This is likely due to its Billi terminal, currently under construction as part of an unprecedented €260 million investment plan. Third place is occupied by Brussels South Charleroi Airport (Belgium), followed by Manchester Airport (England) and Nantes Atlantique Airport (France).
This ranking was created by collecting the average Google Maps rating score and the number of reviews for the 100 busiest airports in Europe, based on passenger numbers. All airports in Russia, Ukraine, and non-operational airports were excluded from this ranking. Data was collected in June 2025.
Madam/Sir:
I have twice departed from Porto Airport, and both times, the experience was awful. I have left scathing reviews. In July, my gate was 13, but after 12, there was nothing but a huge screen and the number 30. No one was around to help, and then after frantically searching, afraid we would miss our flight, we were told that 13 and 30 are the same. It is outrageous.
